High perinatal HIV rates with prematurity or low anti-GP120. Presented at the Fifth International Conference on AIDS; 1989; Montreal, Canada. Abstract Th.A.0.6. 11.
Trans Obstet Soc Lond . 1862;3:293-344. Perinatal asphyxia and resulting HIE is one of the most common identifiable causes of CP and poor neurologic outcome in full-term newborns. The clinical assessment of perinatal asphyxia is based on a specific combination of criteria that identify those infants most likely to have suffered acute injury. Cerebral palsy can be caused by a child being deprived of sufficient oxygen during labor and delivery and a condition known as perinatal asphyxia leading to the development of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. Perinatal asphyxia can be the cause of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy or intraventricular hemorrhage, especially in preterm births. An infant suffering severe perinatal asphyxia usually has poor color ( cyanosis ), perfusion, responsiveness, muscle tone, and respiratory effort, as reflected in a low 5 minute Apgar score . Oxygen deprivation, or intrapartum asphyxia, can cause Cerebral Palsy. One of the most common types of brain damage caused by oxygen loss is called hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, or HIE. When HIE occurs, it often leads to severe developmental or cognitive delays, or motor impairments that become more apparent as the child continues to develop. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a nonprogressive disorder of motion and posture. The causes are multiple, but all result in damage to the central nervous system (CNS) which may occur antenatally, perinatally or postnatally, during the period of early brain growth [ 1 ]. The lack of sufficient blood flow, in conjunction with decreased oxygen content in the blood (perinatal asphyxia), leads to loss of normal cerebral autoregulation and diffuse brain injury.

Birth asphyxia is marked by oxygen loss and blood supply loss to the baby and generally occurs shortly before or during Similarly, absent cerebral palsy, neither epilepsy, mental retardation, nor attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder are caused by birth asphyxia. Historically, the The vast majority of cases of cerebral palsy in nonanomalous term infants are to objectively measure the presence of perinatal asphyxia by using a neonatal This may affect their brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, bowels or other organs. Babies with asphyxia may develop: Cerebral palsy; Developmental delays; Attention Birth Asphyxia and Cerebral Palsy.
